"I've never had a recruiter challenge me like that before, I like it!"

Music to our ears........ It is our responsibility that our clients and our candidates are not set up to fail, the right approach is rarely applied, an approach that delivers the best chance to succeed.
There are many essentials other than engaging a specialist for a revenue generating critical role that should be applied at all times by those who understand recruitment is a huge responsibility, not just a fee to be chased.
Always get a detailed brief of the role itself that should include 'a day in the life of', clarity around objectives and bonus structure (including how achievable they are).
Understand the culture and values fully.
Understand the business itself including where it started and where their journey will take them.
What is the management style and what will the new starter face day one (what are the challenges).
What does good look like and can it be delivered against, let's avoid hunting for a Unicorn.
If we don't challenge the client constructively, if we don't truly understand the requirement, how can we possibly undertake to fill a position with the best chance of successfully doing so.
